Tertiary Alcohols (3°): The carbon bearing the hydroxyl group in tertiary alcohols is bonded to three other carbon atoms. A common example is tert-butanol (C₄H₁₀O). Tertiary alcohols are generally more resistant to oxidation and can undergo other reactions, such as dehydration, to form alkenes.
Such classifications not only help in predicting the physical properties of alcohols but also direct their reactivity in many organic reactions, including oxidation, reduction, and nucleophilic substitution.
