Secondary Alcohols (2°): In secondary alcohols, the carbon to which the hydroxyl group is bonded is also bonded to two other carbon atoms. An example is isopropyl alcohol (CH₃CHOHCH₃). Secondary alcohols are less reactive than primary alcohols, but they also can be oxidized to ketones.

Tertiary Alcohols (3°): The carbon bearing the hydroxyl group in tertiary alcohols is bonded to three other carbon atoms. A common example is tert-butanol (C₄H₁₀O). Tertiary alcohols are generally more resistant to oxidation and can undergo other reactions, such as dehydration, to form alkenes.

Such classifications not only help in predicting the physical properties of alcohols but also direct their reactivity in many organic reactions, including oxidation, reduction, and nucleophilic substitution.
