Preparations Of Carboxylic Acids MDCAT Quiz with Answers

Preparations Of Carboxylic Acids MDCAT Quiz for MDCAT students to know because the basics of how these compounds are synthesized form a foundation. Carboxylic acids could be prepared either by the oxidation of organic compounds or through substitution reactions; each method involves different starting materials and reagents. These preparation techniques are well vital for students to know while solving reaction mechanisms and synthesis questions in the exams.

Oxidation of Alcohols: One of the most common ways to prepare carboxylic acids is by the oxidation of alcohols. Primary alcohols are oxidized to aldehydes, which are then further oxidized to carboxylic acids. This is usually done with the use of very strong oxidizing reagents like potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) or chromic acid (H₂CrO₄).

OXIDATION OF ALDEHYDES: Aldehydes can also be oxidized to carboxylic acids. This is particularly useful in the synthesis of aromatic carboxylic acids from aromatic aldehydes. For example, benzaldehyde (C₆H₅CHO) can be oxidized with KMnO₄ and similar reagents to benzoic acid (C₆H₅COOH). In this oxidation, the carbonyl group of the aldehyde is converted into a carboxyl group.

Hydrolysis of Nitriles: Carboxylic acids may also be prepared by hydrolyzing nitriles. Nitriles are organic compounds containing the -C≡N group. When treated with water in the presence of an acid or base, they undergo hydrolysis to form carboxylic acids. This reaction is of common use for the preparation of the fatty acids.
