Step 1: Parent Chain: The parent chain of phenols is always the benzene ring (C₆H₆), and the presence of the hydroxyl group (-OH) is noted by adding the suffix -ol to the name.
Step 2: Position of Hydroxyl Group If only one hydroxyl group is present on the benzene ring, then it is simply named as phenol. In the case of more than one hydroxyl group, their positions on the benzene ring are indicated with the help of numbers (for example, 1,2-dihydroxybenzene for resorcinol). The hydroxyl group is always assigned the lowest possible number.
Step 3: Substituents: Any other substituents (for example, methyl, nitro, halogens) present on the benzene ring are named as prefixes, and their positions are shown by numbers with relation to the hydroxyl group. Thus, 4-chlorophenol is the name of the phenol with a chlorine atom at the para position with respect to the hydroxyl group.
Step 4: Polyhydroxy Phenols If the phenol contains more than one hydroxyl group attached to the benzene ring, then the naming scheme indicates this in the form -diol, -triol, etc., according to the number of hydroxyl groups. Thus, a phenol having three hydroxyl groups located at positions 1,3 and 5 on the benzene ring will be named 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene.
Examples of simple phenols are the phenol C₆H₅OH (with one hydroxyl group attached to the benzene ring) and the slightly more complex example of 2-methylphenol C₆H₄(OH)(CH₃), in which, along with the hydroxyl group attached to the benzene ring, there is a methyl group attached.
