Anaerobic Respiration MDCAT Quiz with Answers
Anaerobic respiration is a type of cellular respiration that can occur in the absence of oxygen; it lets cells produce energy when oxygen levels are low. It is a process that does not completely break down glucose to carbon dioxide and water as in the case of aerobic respiration since less amount of energy is produced due to partial oxidation of glucose. The products depend upon the type of organism. For example, in animals it produces lactic acid and in some microorganisms such as yeast, it produces ethanol and carbon dioxide through fermentation. However, anaerobic respiration is crucial in the presence of low oxygen levels such as during intense, long-lasting physical exercise or in certain specific anaerobic environments. Due to this, it is not efficient as compared to aerobic respiration as it produces only 2 ATP molecules per molecule of glucose, whereas aerobic respiration produces 36-38 ATP in a glucose molecule. For MDCAT students, it becomes necessary to learn all these for solving questions related to energy production and metabolic changes occurring in organisms.
