12th Class Chemistry Chapter 13 Quiz with Answers
“12th Class Chemistry Chapter 13: Carboxylic Acids” delves deep into the subject of organic compounds containing the carboxyl functional group (− −C O O H − COOH). Because of their specific chemical properties, carboxylic acids take part in many biological functions and industrial purposes. This chapter discusses their structure, methods of preparation, and chemical reactions with various uses. Improve your understanding with our MDCAT Quiz and free flashcards for this most crucial topic.
Structure and Properties
Carboxylic acids belong to a class of organic compounds that contain the carboxyl group, wherein a carbonyl (C=O) and hydroxyl (−OH) group are bonded to the same carbon atom. These two groups cause polarity and provide hydrogen bonding due to which carboxylic acids have high boiling points and are soluble in water.
Acidity
Because of partial dissociation in water, these acids are weakly acidic and produce hydrogen ions (H+ H+ ). Their acidity can be influenced by substituents attached to the carbon chain: electron-withdrawing groups increase acidity, while electron-donating groups reduce it. Hence, carboxylic acids show different reactivity and participate in organic syntheses.
Reactions and Applications of Carboxylic Acids
Carboxylic acids participate in various important reactions, such as esterification, where they react with alcohols to form esters in the presence of acid catalysts. They undergo decarboxylation, eliminating the carboxyl group as carbon dioxide, and reduction to primary alcohols using strong reducing agents like LiAlH

. Additionally, these acids can be converted into acyl chlorides, anhydrides, and amides, making them versatile intermediates in organic synthesis.
Industrially, carboxylic acids have extensive applications. Acetic acid is used in the production of vinegar and synthetic fibers, while formic acid finds use in leather tanning and as a preservative. Fatty acids, a subgroup of carboxylic acids, are essential in soap production, cosmetics, and the food industry. Their biological importance includes roles in metabolism and energy storage.
