The respiratory system is a very complex, inter-linked network of organs and structures that serve mainly to facilitate the exchange of gases, primarily oxygen and carbon dioxide, between the body and the environment. Main components include the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, and diaphragm.

This is the respiration process, which begins with the inhalation of air into the body through the mouth or nose. This air passes through the nasal cavity, where it is filtered, warmed, and moistened before flowing down to the pharynx and larynx, down the trachea, left, and right bronchi which enter into the lungs.

Within the lungs, bronchi dilate into bronchioles that open up into tiny alveoli sacs. The area is permeated by a network of capillaries, and it is here where the exchange of gas takes place. Oxygen from the air diffuses in while carbon dioxide, a byproduct of metabolism, diffuses out-from the blood into the alveoli-since it must be exhaled.

There is a bell-shaped muscle located under the lungs that aids in conducting respiration. As it contracts, this muscle expands volume that may allow air to be admitted into the lungs, and on its relaxation, volume in the cavity decreases which pushes air forward.

The respiratory system controls blood pH, as well as acts as a filter of harmful substances and permits voice control, apart from gas exchange. Thus, the working of the respiratory system will depend on the overall health, effectively taking oxygen to cells to work while removing carbon dioxide.
