Organs and tissues form the constitutive building blocks of the human body. All contribute highly to the working of the whole body. Organs are those units that are composed of more than one kind of tissue which performs several functions. Such examples in this regard are the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys which perform their different tasks in overall processes like circulation, respiration, detoxification, and filtration. Whereas tissues are clumps of similar cells that coordinate with each other to perform defined functions, traditionally, there are four types of tissue classified mainly as epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue. Epithelial tissue is made up of layers that cover the body surfaces and lines different cavities, providing protection and secretion. Connective tissue supports other tissues and binds them together; examples include bone, blood, and adipose tissue. Muscle tissue provides movement by contraction-it occurs in three forms: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth. Nervous tissue has the greatest body requirement for conducting electrical impulses-most obviously in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Therefore, the interaction of organs and tissues leads to understanding human anatomy and physiology. It forms a base to all medical science, thus proper diagnosis and treatment of many conditions. Healthy organs and tissues mean healthy individuals, whereby all their bodily functions are at their best. |
