Hormones are chemical messengers that nearly play a very important role in regulating most of the physiological events in the body. Endocrine glands-they include the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, and pancreas-prod uce hormones that get into the bloodstream and carried to the target organs and tissues where it may cause some reaction.

The hormones regulate the body’s physical processes, such as growth and development, metabolism, reproductive, mood, and stress responses. For example, the hormone insulin is produced by the pancreas. It enables your cells to absorb glucose, thereby controlling the blood sugar levels inside your body. Thyroxine from the thyroid gland controls your metabolism and the usage of energy. Cortisol, produced by the adrenal glands, helps your body increase the sugar level in blood and reduce your not-so-important activities in case of stress.

The endocrine system is the sum of all glands, which makes hormones and works with the nervous system to keep homeostasis: a steady internal environment needed to stay healthy. Hormones cause many diseases when they are imbalanced. For example, hypothyroidism-the underproduction of thyroid hormone-results in, among other things, fatigue and weight gain; on the other hand, hyperthyroidism-overproduction of thyroid hormone-leads to, among other things, weight loss and anxiety. Insulin deficiency or action results in diabetes, which is a condition characterized by high blood sugar content.

Advances in hormone knowledge provided major medical and clinical applications, which included hormone replacement therapy, treatments of endocrine disorder, managing stress, and mental health.
