DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid replication, is the absolutely critical process by which accurate genetic material is produced during cell division. This process is necessary for all living organisms for growth, development, and survival. It is during this time that people learn the steps of DNA replication and how cells ensure genetic continuity.

The first, the double helix unwound by the enzyme helicase, forms two single strands that may be used as templates in building new DNA. Another type of enzyme is called primase. It works through short strands of RNA to synthesize primers that complement the DNA templates. These primers, with something for DNA polymerase to add nucleotides to elongate the newly forming DNA strands,.

DNA Polymerase binds to the primer and elongates a new strand by incorporating nucleotides complementary to the template strand. It functions in a 5′ to 3′ direction. The leading strand promotes continuous DNA replication. When there is lagging strand, DNA replication is not continuous. Instead, smaller segments are generated. These are called Okazaki fragments. The activity of the ligase later joins them together.

Finally, the process of DNA replication is corrected or proofread. Furthermore, DNA polymerase, with its unmatched capacity to correct errors, can even correct mismatched nucleotides.
