Biogeographic regions are also known as biogeographic realms. These are the big areas of the Earth’s surface, and they are associated with specific patterns in flora and fauna. The characteristics represented within such species groups are often unique and have emerged over millions of years with those specific boundaries. Around the globe, there are six biogeographic regions that exist, and all were developed by geological history, climate, and other ecological conditions.

The Nearctic Region includes the North America region, comprising the United States, Canada, and parts of Mexico. Fauna range from the mammals such as bison and bears to unique birds.
This region includes Europe, Asia north of the Himalayas, and northern Africa. This is really a very mixed realm where one combination of tundra-grade habitats blends into deserts. There are wolves, deer, and many different species of migratory birds.
Neotropical Region: This region includes Central and South America and Caribbean islands, which has the largest tropical rain forest of the Amazon Rainforest. This region is a treasure for biodiversity as it shelters jaguars, macaws, and thousands of plant species.
This is the heart home for sub-Saharan Africa from savannas and deserts to the tropical forests, where the elephant, lion, and giraffe megafauna live with many bird and insect species.
Indomalayan Region: It covers South to Southeast Asia and a wide range of biomes, from the tropical rainforest in Central to the Himalayan mountains in the north. It is inhabited by tigers, orangutans, and birds such as the peacock.
It has very limited faunas of marsupials – kangaroos and koalas, and the range of birds, such as emus and kiwi among others, which are all basically found in Australia, New Zealand, and other surrounding islands.

Biogeographic realms are an important tool for understanding how species and ecosystems are distributed in the world, emphasizing the interplay between geography, climate, and evolutionary history in shaping biodiversity. As such, these regions are crucial to consider in conservation efforts because they inform how best to allocate existing resources to protection and management efforts to safeguard Earth’s natural heritage.
