The cell membrane, also known as the plasma membrane, is a fundamental component of all living cells, acting as a selective barrier that regulates the entry and exit of substances. This dynamic structure is crucial for maintaining the cell’s internal environment and facilitating communication with its surroundings.

The plasma membrane is composed primarily of a phospholipid bilayer, embedded with proteins, cholesterol, and carbohydrates. These components provide the membrane with fluidity and flexibility, allowing it to adapt to various conditions and functions. The proteins within the plasma membrane play critical roles in transport, signal transduction, and cell recognition.

Adjacent to the plasma membrane is the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), an extensive network of membranous tubules and sacs. The ER is connected to the nuclear envelope and plays a key role in the synthesis and transport of proteins and lipids. There are two types of ER: rough ER, which is studded with ribosomes and involved in protein synthesis, and smooth ER, which is responsible for lipid synthesis and detoxification processes.

The interplay between the cell and plasma membrane and the endoplasmic reticulum is vital for the cell’s function. Proteins synthesized in the rough ER are often transported to the Golgi apparatus for further modification and sorting, eventually being directed to their final destinations within or outside the cell.
